John Cleese, Connie Booth, Andrew Sachs and Prunella Scales will throw open the doors of Torquay’s most famous hotel to tell the story of how Britain’s best sitcom was made, in two G.O.L.D specials Fawlty Towers: Re-opened and Fawlty Exclusive: Basil’s Best Bits.
With unprecedented candour and access, John Cleese and the rest of the cast tell the behind-the-scenes tale of the series that set the five-star standard for situation comedy in Fawlty Towers:
Cast and crew of the landmark BBC series are joined in celebration of the series by Fawlty’s friends, fans and followers including Michael Palin and Terry Jones, Eddie Izzard, AA Gill, Henry Winkler, Sir Trevor MacDonald and the owners of the Gleneagles Hotel : John Cleese’s inspiration for the titular hotel.
Leaving no English Riviera stone unturned, viewers will also be treated to nuggets such as other considered anagrams of the hotel sign including ‘slow wet farty’ and snippets of foreign re-makes of the series such as the Pakistani show, Guest House.
G.O.L.D. – officially the nation’s favourite comedy channel – is known for its thorough celebrations of British humour, with previous hit shows Blackadder: The Whole Rotten Saga boosting ratings up 144% on slot average and Morecambe & Wise: The Greatest Moment creating a spike of 195% on slot average. On Christmas Day 2008, G.O.L.D. beat terrestrial channel five to rank as the 5th most watched channel in pay TV homes, with a share of 2.61%.
Commissioned by Jane Rogerson and ordered by Christian Drobnyk, Paul Moreton at UKTV, both Fawlty Towers: Re-opened and Fawlty Exclusive: Basil’s Best Bits are made by Tiger Aspect, with Ricky Kelehar as Executive Producer.
